2. Is it something to do with their nicknames being derived from an association their full name (middle name?) has with something else? I say this because Richard Melville Hall is the real name of Moby (Melville is the connection, obviously).
Not really, but you have identified one of them. If you get the other two it'll help.

Spot on Shayne. Pele and Moby have been correctly identified, Paul David Hewson is better known as Bono.

Over to you.

Thanks, Bilbo, good quiz! I don't have a question ready, so could someone else take it, please.

This quizz reminded me of an interesting factoid... about the Dutch Elm Tree Disease that has just about wiped out all of America's magnificent Elm trees.

A Vermont woman developed a cure for this disease, but unfortunately there was no funding available to implement it. She did manage to save ALL the Elm trees in her local area but that was about it.

Who was she, what was her treatment, and why couldn't it be easily used all over the country to save the species.

Did I kill the quiz with another science question?

Perhaps a clue would be in order?

Did the cure involve maple syrup?

Well, the only solutions to the disease that I know about are either isolation, or anti-fungal injections. Neither of which are practical on a large scale.

One gets maple syrup from Maple trees... not from Elm trees.

Well, the mouse got it in one! Susan Morse developed the system for injecting the anti-fungals into EACH tree, which as you say, was impractical for large scale use, but only because of budgetary constraints. It would have taken many people many months of intense labor to save the trees, and no one was willing to spend the money. Dollars vs species. Dollars-1, Elm trees-0
Sue was my mentor during my undergrad studies.

I would have thought the the treatment would also need repeating when there's re-infection. I beleive there are also some attempts to find resistant specimens and propagate them.

A question!

What is the longest palindrome (e.g. "Madam, I'm Adam") that you know without having to look it up?

The longest one I have in my memory is 7 words and 19 letters (and 6 spaces): "Able was I, ere I saw Elba"

Since this is an open-ended question, you have one day from now to post your palindrome.

You take the lead! Also seven words, but 21 letters.
