Android accounted for 75% of all smartphones shipped worldwide for the third quarter of 2011, with 136 million units shipped. Apple slipped to 14.9%.

136 million units in one quarter, that's an incredible number, almost double what they shipped Q3 last year.

On one of the comment threads someone expressed it thus:

In the last quarter, there was an android phone shipped for one in every 55 people on the planet.

It should be noted that Google's activation figures correspond well to these shipments, so while these are shipments rather than sales the two are not that far apart.
