Upgrades are good for the bottom line.

I will use my ipad1 until it falls apart or is no more compatible with software, the latter more possible. I have no need to upgrade it. Maybe, and that's a big maybe I will buy ipad 7 or 8 (6 is too close if now they are releasing them every 6 months)
I do not feel bad at all about having ipad1. Best money ever spent on a gadget, I had no idea it would be so useful. |

I'm very happy with my 3gen and will not be upgrading for a good while. I'm not interested in upgrading just to have the latest and greatest (don't have that kind of money, either). I did upgrade from the 2gen when the 3 came out, because I spend so much time reading pdf files on my iPad for work and the retina screen really made that much more comfortable. But now I'm generally happy with the state of my electronics and don't have any plan to upgrade anything for the next year or two.

I have an ipad 1. I also won't upgrade till it falls apart. SW is already starting to show its age. My usatoday app no longer works as I've left the ipad at ios3. I only use it for book readin, web browsing, and an occasional game of chess however, so I'll prod along with it for as long as I can.

As he caressed the side of the latest iMac personal computer, he noted how thin it was - five millimeters, 80 percent thinner than the last one. Then he said, with an air of surprise, as if he'd just thought of it: "Isn't it amazing how something new makes the previous thing instantly look old?"
The new iMac is a risible design. There is no apparent reason why a desktop computer should strive for thinness. It neither has to be squeezed into a bag, nor do people put it on the wall like a flatscreen TV. Instead you are now expected to clutter your desk with a separate DVD-drive at your own expense or to crawl behind the computer just because you want to put in a SD-Card. |

I figure on my iPad and iPhone, 2 to 3 years before I'll upgrade again. I hadn't planned on buying the 'New iPad" but the screen was a huge change from the iPad 1. My iPod Touch, I will probably use until it dies.
I use all these items for personal use only. If I used them professionally, I'd probably upgrade at least every two years. It all depends on the changes in the hardware. If there were huge processor changes and it was a business use, I'd buy annually. Time is money and the faster it can process, the better. I've never felt the need for the best and the fastest, I don't mind when my hardware becomes outdated. It's just a fact of life. |

![]() All joking aside, heat has to be a consideration when making something small. Portable computers have a reason to strive for compactness, desktop computers less so.

Look what thinness did to Steve Jobs ............;(
A thinner product does not mean a better product. Everybody thinks face recognition is a cool gadget. Its actually going to be used by governments and law enforcement and military and the DHS so they know who you really are and what you have done in the past and your whereabouts and you are paying for this technology...see how the system works? I have been pretty good about now updating just to update. I went from a K1 to a DXG after 2 years. I did get a K3 but about 6 months after they came out. I still have an iPod 4, although the battery on it sucks so now I use it in my sons bedroom. I have an iPod Nano for travel but I think it is three generations old. I am thrilled with my iPad 3 and don't see the need to upgrade. It more than does what I need it to do. I am one of the last people on the planet to not have a smart phone. I don't want to pay the data fees and barely use my cameraless cellphone as it is. I like the idea of the iPod Touch but don't like the price point and have not been able to come up with a time that I would have that on me and not have my iPad.
So I will be happy with my current toys and not be all that worried about upgrading. I don't see myself needing a new ereader anytime soon.
