Houston ... the Eagle has landed! Great trip, great flying, great weather, great scenery, great people, great vacation, lousy tea. I forgot to bring my own and had to drink Lipton's Yellow Label...

Now I'm kicking back with a cup of Yorkshire tea, and getting ready to start working on the pictures. My wife took all the flight photos, and I'd say she did a pretty fine job of it! Not easy to get good photos when shooting moving objects in the sky!

If you have an Asian market in your area, they will have them. They are just either hardwood or bamboo charcoal sticks, about 3"-4" long and 1/2" in diameter. Usually come in a plastic bag with 2-3 sticks inside for a couple of dollars. They last several years. If you can't find them (but you should be able to in any large Asian market. They are in EVERY supermarket in every Asian country!) let me know and I'll send you some. If you can get any 'natural charcoal,' i.e. NOT briquettes, that will work. Just rinse off any surface dust and drop in your hot pot. I just took a look in our pot and I can see charcoal dust specs on the bottom of the tank. Eating natural charcoal will not harm you in any way. In fact, you can get charcoal capsules in every healthfood store. Unfortunately, the charcoal in them is too fine to use in your water pot. Another source is art supply stores. Many sell natural charcoal sticks for drawing, though they tend to be thin. Still, they work fine.

Thanks! The only ones i saw online were $16 for three sticks. The charcoal for art was a lot less.

What was your longest flight?

Not yet knowing how to find thermals and updrafts, just top to bottom of the middle hill. A matter of minutes that seem like seconds... We'll go back in the Spring after the snow melts, and I'll learn more. I figure I did OK just getting off the Bunny Slope! Only one minor injury (a sprained finger) that occurred when I was NOT flying, just standing in the field without a chute, but trying to dodge the erratic landing of another student who flew from the top of the mountain. She kept switching left and right. I finally had to dive under her, and hit my finger on the ground! There were quite a lot of people flying that day (not just students) and the landing area (see attachment not all that large and rather crowded. The rest of the field to the right (out of the picture) was just as crowded.

Wish you all could have been there! Wonderful experience. There were people ranging in age from 14 to 72... In my classes, ranging from 17 to me. A little scary at first, but then... oh my...
I'm drinking more Keemun tea and working on photos. My wife couldn't fly this time so she was the designated photographer. I still have to do the scut work and clean up the shots... bummer. I need to teach her how to process images! She just likes to press the little button.
