I too am waiting for the eBook's price to drop. Or for a good discount I can apply on purchase. But I will definitely read it.

It's an interesting title. Any comments on what it means?

Saw this blurb in an article recently. EW's Shelf-Life:

The original title of The Casual Vacancy was Responsible: Rowling tells The New Yorker that “this is a book about responsibility” — both in a minor and a macro sense. However, she came across the real title when she got her hands on a copy of the standard British handbook for local administrators. “I needed it to check certain abstruse points. And in there I came across the phrase ‘a casual vacancy.’ Meaning, when a seat falls vacant through death or scandal. And immediately I knew that that was the title.”

The book is divided into parts and at the beginning of each part she quotes something from this handbook.

I just finished The Casual Vacancy today. I don't typically buy ebooks priced as high as this one was, but I had credit on iTunes from a giftcard that I received CHristmas so I decided to treat myself. My feelings about the book are: I really wanted to like it and found that I liked it okay, but not that much. There were not ANY characters in the book that I particularly liked and rooted for all the time. I found myself rooting for a character at one moment and being disgusted by that character the next moment. I'm not sorry that I spent the money on the book, but I don't think that I will be recommending this book as a must read to any of my friends or relatives.

I finished the book too. My feelings are the same. The characters aren't very likable because they are exaggerated stereotypes to show that the middle-class characters are selfish and mean with no heart to help the lower-class characters who are criminals, drug-users and prostitutes. All of the characters are damaged goods with emotional baggage. I hated the ending, which is what solidified the book as a one-sided "socialist manifesto" as several reviews have called it. I kept reading with the hope that there would be some inspiring change in the characters, but the last 50 pages or so really soured my opinion of the book.

I don't regret that I read it. If she writes another book, then I will probably read that too. By the way, the price has dropped to $14.99 in the US.

I've recently finished The Casual Vacancy, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think that it depends on the culture that you've been exposed to the most throughout your life as to what you're going to take away from it: for me, the culture shown in The Casual Vacancy was an extremely realistic one. I think that as a first attempt at writing adult/general fiction, Rowling has done a bang-up job. I'll certainly be buying her next book, and I'll be happy to pay $25 again.

Those are my exact feelings. What I liked about it was its realism, even though the characters weren't exactly likable. I have to admit though that I liked the Weedon children, both of them. Maybe I am just weird, but I have a tendency to go for the outsiders.

I also agree that it depends on the culture that you've been exposed to. The way Rowling dissected life in a small rural town in England was spot on. You don't have to like it, but if you don't, it doesn't mean it's a bad book. Tastes differ widely and I think it was well written. But that's just my humble opinion, of course.

Compared to her Harry Potter series, her character development and backstory are woeful. Not a fully dimensioned, or likeable character among them. I won't be finishing the book.

I was thinking about buying it actually, just because I absolutely loved the Harry Potter series, and she does such a great job at writing in such a way you feel like your envisioning what's happening. This book is definitely going on my wish list!!

I am still on the fence. I LOVE JK Rowling's Potter series - I have read it over and over and have literally devoured these books.

But I have read half way through and so far I am disappointed. I must admit at first I was turned off by the crassness in the book (Maybe I am too much of a prude) but I just didn't feel like so many F*bombs were necessary. I was also a bit put off by the jumping around and found it confusing (until I started to get a grasp on characters). For the first little bit I spent more time trying to figure out who was who instead of actually reading it (and I feel I have a good comprehension level).

I plan to finish the book though ... but at this point I think it's because I desperately want to like it lol. I don't have high hopes though.
