What improvements? Earlier on you didn't notice "any real benefits" and DID notice some system instability. You seem to have stuck with the firmware, despite the bugs. What features would you miss if you went back? And how unstable are we talking?

Thanks

OK. I have installed it, then reinstalled it because I switched to Nomad reader as the default, only to learn that it cannot read B&N DRM.

I uninstalled the included wifi locker and installed the nookdevs version. In theory they should be identical, but the included one froze. I uninstalled the Market's terminal because the keyboard defaulted to Cyrillic. Now the nookdevs version also defaults to Cyrillic. I must have missed a setting somewhere. I will post changes as I learn so others can spare themselves the aggravation.

EDIT: The nookdevs wifi-locker also locks up on occasion. I cannot change the default keyboard to English. I went so far as to download signedbravoupdate.dat; use a binary editor to cut off the 173 byes before the gzip header; unzip everything; get the LatinIME.apk and install it. And still I have Cyrillic keyboards.

To me, Nomad reader is far from replacing the B&N reader. To change the default, maybe you can try uninstall Nomad reader and re-install using adb through USB.

For input method, one need to long-press in text area to choose a different one. Would it be working if you just remove the Cyrillic input method apk and reboot?

Thanks for the input. I have had a hard time finding the Cyrillic input method. I have not used my Nook for a while. When I went to use it today I noticed that the cityscape screensaver was on, but the button was unresponsive. I figure that the auto-off didn't work and the battery died while it was running.

I plugged it in and the battery did not charge. Then I took out the battery a couple times and plugged the Nook into my computer and the recharge light turned on.

The Nook is now working as before. For those of you wondering what sort of bugs are encountered, there you are.

I gave this firmeware a try yesterday.
My good old Nook now works better than ever. The library looks very nice and scrolls very smoothly, the fullscreen option for the standard reader is a very nice feature, I think the contrast is better in the standard reader now.
The nomad reader I didn't like. It has a few nice options but it doesn't display the books the way I want it to.

Actually I met quite a few times that when I try to turn on my nook classic with this firmware, it just prompt me that it's going to turn off to save power. Obviously the bug is that it fails to turn on the machine to shutdown. Previous soft-rooted firmwares also have similar problems.

To recover from a non-response nook due to low power battery is simple: just take out the batter and then plug in external power and press power button to boot. Once it starts the booting, you can put the batter back and it will start charging.

Does the web browser included in this install perform faster/better than either of nookdevs or the BN firmware 1.5 versions? Latter two seem to take a LOT of time to load wep pages. Is there anyway to load just text? Usually looking for information not wonerful graphics on the eink....

I think it is the same browser. The speed has never bothered me as much as the page layout and navigation. I don't use the browser if I can avoid it.

I'm not certain that I'm not saying the same thing about the nookdevs browser - which I try to use mostly - just saying it very poorly. It is trying to get at the information without hte constant page loading. I did find a little improvement in using the settigs>readability toggle but it isn't always successful. I'm about to forget the browser thing entirely and look for a reader like nook google reader - which still ain't working......

Well, as far as the classic nook goes - rooted or not - a web browser function just is not realistically useful. Google reader for nook as well as nookfeed seems broke, and trying to read news clips in any app somehow escapes me. I guess its use is an ebook reader and that's about it. Time to think of a more modern device, I guess..... Or am I giving up too soon?
