Must be a market for parts

I, too, have noticed lots of KKs for sale on eBay lately. I've had mine for almost 24 months. I keep it in a case but take it on lots of trips. So far no damage except tiny hairline cracks running diagonally from the lower corners of the screen.

I assume there is a market for spare KK parts, e.g. batteries, wireless cards and flash memory. I've never tried taking mine apart but it's pretty easy to install new wireless cards and memory in laptops so how hard can it be once you've got the KK case off?

In any case, the eBay prices for these unusable devices are very low. It will be more interesting to see how the market adapts to the onslaught of PWs in a few weeks. Might be nice to have a space K lying around (and I'm too frugal to be an early adopter) even though I keep my book and magazine collection on my laptop and backup, not my KK.

Those cracks are a defect of the early production runs of the Kindle Keyboard. My friend got hers replaced for no charge and no shipping charges. Many others have reported the same deal on replacement of units with that problem. Call Kindle support (not Amazon support) and explain, maybe they are still doing that free replacement (it was regardless of warranty expiration).

Thanks Alan. While it's good to see Amazon standing by its products, I'd rather save time, money and the planet by keeping it instead of getting a new or refurbished one. Those tiny cracks don't interfere with the Kindle's function in any way and air freighting stuff like this to my location burns a lot of fossil fuel.

BTW I see another thread here describing replacement of K screens. Wouldn't it be wonderful if device designers could be convinced to make electronics modular and user maintainable? Maybe a tax on devices that aren't would accomplish this, just as carbon taxes make some industries think twice about wasteful practices.

Getting off my socialist soapbox now . . .

Personally, I prefer the weight and bulk savings. If my phone and Nook doubled their weight and thickness to accommodate user maintainability, they'd be a lot less convenient to keep in my pocket every day.

I had my first K3 replaced after dropping it from Amazon, too, though it was still under warranty.

Frankly, I'd recommend just purchasing one off Craigslist and not paying until you have a chance to see the device (as well as verify the owner de-registered it). That's how I sold mine, and both I and the purchaser were very pleased with the outcome.
