Some apps, maybe. There are certainly others that run in a small box in the middle of a tablet screen.

On the other hand, 3 screen sizes are one too many for iOS and apps have to be letter-boxed. Fail. Or is it iFail? No, it's rather uFail.

iOS apps can be written to handle difference screen sizes in a single app.

So in each case, a single app can be designed to work well at different screensizes, or it can not be. That is down to the app creator.

Different screen sizes includes different aspect ratios?

When I made made the comment about the aspect ratio of the screen I was remembering what was said in Apple vs. Android discussions regarding tablets. With phones, the argument for the size of the screen was that anything bigger the whole screen couldn't be comfortably reached with your fingers, right?

Yes, the iPhone and iPad have always had different aspect ratios.

Samsung wants a new patent trial with Apple in the US, claiming the jury couldn't and shouldn't have come to its $1.05bn verdict for its iPhone-maker rival.

The South Korean firm's filing with the court is partially redacted, but the section that's been blacked out is likely to claim jury misconduct, as previous cases cited to back it up are ones where jury misconduct prompted a new trial.

If I had a 1.05bn judgment against me, I would want a new trial as well. What have they got to lose? Except if the next jury decides to up the ante if they lost again.

That's not how damages are supposed to be decided though, according to various sites covering the legal aspects, the damages should not be used as a punishment. Which it sounds like is exactly what that jury decided to use it as.

During a court hearing on Friday Apple asked for a bigger payout, saying that Samsung has caused irreversible "damage to the iPhone's distinctive product identity'.

It also said: "Samsung has reaped extraordinary rewards from its wrongful sale of iPhone and iPad clones by taking market share, revenues, and profits from Apple."

I thought the one thing that the US jury didn't convict Samsung on was that the Tab was an iPad clone?

You probably wouldn't see it now, as Android tablets are so mainstream, and the OS has been updated to merge the phone and tablet interfaces, but it was certainly the case when I first got my Nook Color, when Android was very much still a phone OS running on tablets. Just as there were lots of iPhone-only apps when the iPad was first released, but they are uncommon now. The point being that it isn't an Android thing or an iOS thing, both OSs allow developers to produce apps that run at different screen sizes and aspect ratios, but it is up to the developers to actually code that support.

Androminium was one I remember, it just got a proper tablet UI update last month.

Well, it should be remembered that those early tablets were released before Google announced a version of Android for tablets. Those same apps, even if they hadn't been updated, mostly scaled up properly when run on Android v3 or later (although a lot insisted on being run with the tablet held in portrait). You didn't need a proper tablet UI to be written just to take advantage of the full size of the screen.

Meanwhile, Samsung filed a motion with a US court to add Apple's iPhone 5 to their ongoing patent battle.

Samsung says it filed the motion on Monday with the California court, alleging that Apple's new phone infringes on eight of its patents

Both of them remind me of a couple of eight year old boys throwing rocks at each other from either side of a fence.
