When I highlight something on PDF I get: <This item is copy protect>

All that's built into the Kindle is a pdf reader. To make any alteration - even as simple as a highlight - you need a pdf editor. As far as I know that isn't an option. Sorry.

This is a feature of the PDF, not of the device. If you tried to do the same thing with the same PDF on a computer, you'd probably get a similar message.

well if that is the case, then why when I converted it to mobi did it allow me to highlight stuff again...Did it strip the DRM in the process?

Real ebooks have flowing pages that can resize themselves for whatever screen size you are using. PDFS tend to be designed for a fixed page size. Mike
