Apple had effect on Samsung that they wanted. Shot across bow.

The horses are out of stable with phones, but they will think hard about copying new products (non-phones) apple brings to the market in the future.

Samsung copies -- is their business practice.

Samsung’s strategy was to build something similar to another company’s product but to make it better, faster and at lower cost. When it pounced, it flooded the market with a wide range of models that were constantly updated with incremental improvements at a speed its rivals found hard to match — a strategy best illustrated by its smartphone business. Heavy investments have not been a problem; it once secured low-cost loans from a government-controlled banking sector friendly to big businesses and now draws on its own coffers, which are sloshing with cash.

You know what? Take those 2 sentences that I marked in bold and change Samsung for Apple. According to wikipedia Samsung made its first mobile phone in 1988. The one who waited until others tested the market was Apple.

Apple took features from other manufacturers and made the iPhone.

They made a phone (in its entirty) that was unlike any on market at the time. That is what Samsung pounced on. We know this.

That's debatable. It had similarities to the LG Prada; a touch screen with minimalistic looks with rounded corners. And they didn't make the phone in "its entirety", they built upon what was already there - like everybody else.

It's amazing how often this is ignored. I used a series of wonderful Palm handhelds for years before the iPhone. Candy bar form factor, touch sensitive, screens of colourful icons arranged in a grid, app store, all the standard functionality.

You could even get add-on hardware to turn some of them into phones.
