Might I suggest that Amazon is merely doing what most japanese CE companies do: release the product first to the native market where customer support is simpler and make sure there are no hidden bugs before going international. Plus, the approach lets them get product out the door for the monolingual market before finishing the multilingual international version.

Woo hoo! Kindle Fire HD 7" up on Amazon UK; no sign of the 8.9", so maybe that's a US exclusive??

The PW Kindle has a mistake in the specs. Amazon is calling the screen Paperwhite Built-in light. It's actually an eink screen with a capacitive touch layer and then the light layer on top.

Sony tried the capacitive touch layer and it was a failure. The only thing that Sony didn't do it put the light right on top of the screen. The 700 had a light layer but that was not directly on top and that was not good.

I do look forward to finding out how the Kindle screen looks with the light off. Sure, I can make my 650's background look lighter by having a good light source. But, the idea is to see how the screen looks in normal lighting.

I do like the increased battery capacity and maybe it's possible that with the new fonts it might be OK. I never liked the original Kindle font.

Did anybody notice how Amazon was attacking the Nexus 7". It looks like the N7 stole substantial sales from Amazon.

Does the UK have 4G LTE compatible with AT&T's 4G LTE? If not, that would be a good reason the Fire HD isn't available.

But I do think it's wrong of Amazon not to have a 32G Fire HD with no 4G LTE for say $399.

Sony used pressure sensitive *resistive* tech not capacitance.

Their CS is doing just fine in France, Germany and Spain (the three local amazon store I use), so that is not the explanation to me.

Thanksgiving and Xmas in the US are though, and as always amazon wants to make sure they have the volumina available.

Because we pagans here do not buy real presents for Xmas, we are very happy if we get an orange, and anyway, no time for celebrating, we are still busy wondering the sheer magic of electricity....
