Harry Harrison Dies
I really enjoyed his Stainless Steel Rat books, and also the Deathworld series and a few others. |

The name wasn't familiar until I looked him up. He's the guy who wrote Make Room! Make Room! (1966), which was the basis for the film Soylent Green (1973) - "It's people. Soylent Green is made out of people."
RIP dude |

RIP Harry, you will be missed. You'll live on in your works, though.

He hated that they made it into people in the film version. I grew up reading his books, I think I've got them all. Including the one he wrote as Leslie Charteris and a few of the old magazines that had uncollected stories in them.

RIP, Harry.
Some of the Stainless Steel Rat books were my favorites when I was a kid. I'll have to dig around and see if I still have any left. |

Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers and A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah! are two splendid examples of his humorous SF. One a wonderful spoof on grand space opera (e.g. E E 'Doc' Smith's lensmen series), and the other a steam-punk story before steam-punk existed.

Oh. Sad news. I've been meaning to read the Stainless Steel Rat books for years, maybe it's time. I've read many of his other work over the years. At least his work is with us. That is the great thing about being a writer/artist, your work can remain...at least for a time...

BILL, THE GALACTIC HERO mourns, too.
Not good. DEATHWORLD 2: THE ETHICAL ENGINEER is still among my all-time favorites. (And a must-read for anybody engaged in online discussions. )

Quote:
He always wrote with a light touch, not just in a comedic sense, but as a writing style. No heavy descriptions, just what was needed. No show of great knowledge, (it was there, but always carefully buried), but letting the events of the story do the showing. No elegant and high-brow diction, but a vocabulary that let everybody enjoy, from kids to adults. And such rattling good stories... He skewered Hollywood and time travel at the same time (The Technicolor Time Machine). The generation ship and Mayan culture in Captive Universe. He gave a real, in-depth look at the ramifications of Matter Transmission in a string of short stories. And lots of short stories...(The Streets of Askeron, 'Not Me, Not Amos Cabot', I Always Do What Teddy Says, We Ate The Whole Thing....) And finally, a big pusher of Esperanto. A life well-lived. (And he shared the best parts with us).
