With the cloud you don't own anything

Since we had heated discussions regarding local, on-device storage lately (with many advocating that you don't need much local storage because you can stream everything), here are the words of the great Woz on this subject:

Anybody who says you don't need local storage is an idiot. You can quote me on that.

Yep. The cloud is cool, but if you don't have local storage you're indeed an idiot.

I wasn't getting through to my relatives on why they needed more storage, then my Mom stepped in. She used the example of when Netflix took their favorite show off streaming and they couldn't watch it. The light came on..

Only downside, now I have to make another trip home for more tech support.

Yeah and the poor monkey won't be able to read his Kindle after a while, unless it's solar powered, of course.

I've been saying this for a couple of years now. The only reason Woz isn't be treated like a technological prophet of doom is because he's Woz and people listen to him.

It really depends on where you live. No matter how nazi an EULA is, it doesn't count at all in a court, here in Denmark. Companies have to follow danish laws for data and privacy protection, and not their own made up rules.

Look at what Google did with collecting everybody's Wifi data. And what happened? Were they severely punished? Does anyone really know if they have deleted any of the data? So, how can you trust any of them?

Exactly. Sure, Norway has privacy and data protection laws too, which companies are supposed to abide by, but the question is whether or not they are enforceable. And even if enforcement is attempted, how to do you verify compliance, both immediate and over time? Can't be done basically, unless the government of the country in which the company and it's data reside wholeheartedly goes along with both enforcement and verification. The chance of that happening? Slim to none.

I'm sticking with hard drives and SD cards thank you very much.

I back up all of my data to my own multiple back up drives, both business and personal. Wasn't there a pro photographer recently who lost most of his photos because the online company he stored them with went bankrupt?
Sorry, I just do not trust other companies to store my data as securely as I do.

I think you have to backup your files yourself. You don't know what's going to happen to data stored elsewhere.

If you were thinking about the Nexus 7 threads, I think there is a difference between saying you don't need local storage on a particular device and saying you don't need local storage. So, for example, I can decide to count on streaming a movie via the cloud when I am at a WiFi hotspot and still have a physical file located on my home computer.

There's a camera now that has that issue; the memory card is non-removable and photos are transferred by wifi to the manufacturer's website, where the photographer can view and edit them using the manufacturer's website frontend and then export them after suitably intrusive watermarking to Facebook or Myspace.

Naturally, any photographer worth his lenses is keeping his distance.
