With the fragmentation that Android has brought upon itself ("can't run on this phone, not compatible with that phone, not designed for tablets...") it's little wonder that Amazon wouldn't want to scare people off by blazing "Android" across the marketing materials.
Exactly. Amazon doesn't market it as an Android device and does everything it can to keep you from accessing Google's store and many of their applications. They don't sell it as an open device, but as an Amazon device.

Amazon really needs to get their act together on KF8 books. I spent all day trying to get a book I'm writing to properly generate. I used some CSS magic to make a single file that displays properly on eInk Kindles (which still do NOT display KF8 books) and also display via KF8 on applicable devices. Here are the results:
  • Looks good on my K3 Keyboard - displays as a mobi 7 book
  • Looks good on Kindle for PC - displays as a KF8 book
  • Looks good on Kindle for Android - displays as a KF8 book
  • Fire will not recognize the book when sideloaded via USB
  • Fire mistakenly displays it as a mobi 7 book when sent via email as a Personal Document

There is obviously some problems occuring with the Fire and KF8 books generated with Kindle Viewer 2.4. I would hate to publish my KF8 book and then have it merely look like a mobi 7 book.

The KF8 book can be sideloaded via USB to an eInk Kindle and my phone running Kindle for Android, but it cannot be sideloaded via USB to the Fire. The file shows up on the fire, but the Fire has no clue as to what it is.

Kindle App for Android has supported KF8 since version 3.5.0. The most current version is 3.5.1.

There have been some important enhancements in the latest updates. In addition to support for Kindle Format 8, you can now email personal documents to your Android device by using its Send-to-Kindle email address. You can find this address at Amazon (go to Your Account, select Manage Your Kindle, then go to Personal Document Settings). You can also select from multiple dictionary languages when looking up definitions.

Thanks. I updated and now my personal document in KF8 format properly displays on my phone. Now if I could just get it to properly display on my Fire.

Oh good, another worthless blog spreading totally unsubstantiated rumors. Meh!!! The rumors last year about the current Fire were mostly wrong, BTW. Where is the infamous 10" Fire that rumormongers were squealing (like pigs) about? Just because you wish for something doesn't make it come true, and about 99% of the rumors seem to be wishes rather than fact-based information. And about 99% of bloggers write worse than an elementary school student. I typed a word--I are blogger.

About as legitimate as a lot of other rumors. It's all within the realm of possibility, but nothing is set in stone that we all know of.

I'll buy the next generation Kindle Fire regardless. I'm a sucker for everythng Amazon sells. I'll buy it as soon as Amazon has it up for sale at its web site.

So far in the last few years I've had a Sony 505 eReader, a Sony 900 eReader, a Kindle 3, a Kindle Fire and now the new Kindle Fire eInk glow in color weighing only 4 ounces and having android app capabilities as well.

My library will benefit from all my obsolete eReaders. Hopefully, they can loan them to poor folks so they, too, can read eBooks.

It appears 3 years is the maximum life for my PC's and eReaders. At least my cars last 10 to 20 years.

Thats because Pc's greatly improve inside a 3 year time particulalty for computer intensive things like editing and computer game playing . and well lets put it this way most of the "fuel efficient" cars nowdays have the same average gas mileage as in 1980! only a few hybrids truly get better mileage.

1, that's not true.
2, mpg is not the only improvement made in cars and rarely the main reason one would replace one.
