I will second Ivanhoe. I would have pushed Persuasion along (about time I read some Jane Austen) and War of the Worlds along, but both are already fully nominated.

I will use one of my nominations for The Black Arrow by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The Black Arrow: A Tale of the Two Roses is an 1888 novel by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, which can be classed genre-wise as a historical adventure novel and a romance. It is available as an ebook for free from a number of sources (Inkmesh).

I'd like to nominate Middlemarch by George Eliot.

Spoiler:
Descriptions from Amazon:

It was George Eliot's ambition to create a world and portray a whole community--tradespeople, middle classes, country gentry--in the rising fictional provincial town of Middlemarch, circa 1830. Vast and crowded, rich in narrative irony and suspense, Middlemarch is richer still in character and in its sense of how individual destinies are shaped by and shape the community.

---

This panoramic work--considered the finest novel in English by many critics--offers a complex look at English provincial life at a crucial historical moment, and, at the same time, dramatizes and explores some of the most potent myths of Victorian literature. The text of this edition comes from the Clarendon Middlemarch, the first critical edition of the novel.

---

Set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during the years 1830-32, George Eliot's "Middlemarch" is a work of epic scope filled with numerous characters, which explores a plethora of themes including the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism and self-interest, religion and hypocrisy, political reform, and education. Considered one of the great works of the English language, George Eliot's "Middlemarch" was immensely popular upon original publication and remains one of the finest examples of the author's prolific and accomplished literary career.

I will third A Movable Feast. Before the month ends I will be reading The Paris Wife by Paula McLain for the evening book club at my local library. It will be nice to get two perspectives on roughly the same subject matter.

I'll second Old Man and the Sea.

I'll nominate The Call of the Wild by Jack London. Project Gutenberg link.

I'll nominate Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.

Quote:
It was classified by the Modern Library website editors as one of the "100 best novels"...

The story centres on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book. He is an Englishman who takes a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a river-boat captain in Africa. Heart of Darkness exposes the dark side of European colonization while exploring the three levels of darkness that the protagonist, Marlow, encounters: the darkness of the Congo wilderness, the darkness of the Europeans' cruel treatment of the African natives, and the unfathomable darkness within every human being for committing heinous acts of evil.

Now to decide if I want to purchase this for a borrowed iPad, or wait until the end of the year when I'll get my own.

Doesn't seem to be available in ePub though.

Just a quick mistake that needs to be fixed. The War of the Worlds is in the MR library in a number of different formats.

Also, when linking to a search, you cannot use a search ID as that expires. None of the links to the MR library in posts 1 & 2 work.
