From the Two Rivers (epic fantasy) by Robert Jordan $0.99 (Nook, Kobo, Kindle)

While reading about the new DRM-free policy for Tor (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...t=tor+drm+free), I noticed From the Two Rivers by Robert Jordan advertised on the Tor website for 99 cents. It's part of the "Wheel of Time" series, and is described as "epic fantasy". It's also described elsewhere on the website as "Part 1 of The Eye of the World". Not quite sure what's up with that - maybe "The Eye of the World" series is a subset of the "Wheel of Time" series??? I don't read much fantasy, so I'm not up on these...

Anyway, I searched MobileRead just now, and don't see any posts for this yet, so here's the info:

Quote:
The Wheel of Time is a truly epic fantasy series, spanning three decades and fourteen books, and representing many lifetimes’ worth of creativity both on and off the page. Its world is staggeringly detailed and full of mystery and the rewards for those who delve into it are immense.

With the promised final volume of the series well underway, now is a perfect time for fans of epic fantasy to see what all the fuss is about. To that end, Tor Books is making From the Two Rivers, the beginning of The Wheel of Time, available as an ebook for only 99 cents.

From the Two Rivers is available from all ebook retailers and for all devices, including Nook, Kindle, and iPad.
I checked and it is available for the 99 cent price at:

Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/From-The-Two-R...5906251&sr=8-2)

BN - http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/from...=9781429977678

Kobo - http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/From-...yqE3vNgmbw&r=1

Sorry, I don't do Apple...

Hopefully these links are afffiliate-free since I typed the store URL's in by hand to start. If not, some moderator can zap me if they wish.

"The Eye of the World" is the first book in the Wheel of Time series. This is the first half of that book. Tor put it out for $0.99 around January..

The Eye of the World is actually the 1st book in The Wheel of Time series.

A couple of years ago, the publisher split in into 2 books, which they sold separately for the YA market, according to Wikipedia.

So this is probably just the first half of the actual book, being sold separately as promo in the hopes that you'll splurge for the entire thing.

ETA: Oops, already explained while I was still typing.

Might nevertheless be worth it for the hardcore fans, as Wikipedia says that the print edition had an extra prologue and some new illustrations included, if those are included in the e-book.

Probably the hope you'll spring for the whole fourteen books

Does anyone recommend this series for an occasional fantasy reader? The description sounds sort of interesting...

I've only read part of the 1st novel in adaptation as a graphic novel form and it seemed okay, if a bit generic fantasy-chosen-farmboy-overturns-evil-quest trope, but from all accounts, it's an unfinished bottomless pit of a series which will not die even though the original author did.

Sure, Tor says that the final volume is underway, but a couple of years ago they said there would be a wrap-up volume to finish the series, which soon expanded to 3 wrap-up volumes just to take care of all the dangling plot stuff. I would not personally wager money on this finally-final volume actually being the last one that gets written.

But hey, the 1st half of the 1st book is only 99 cents, so at least it will be cheap to give a try.

To be honest I find the series a bloody good read.

It is a bit long and if you are only looking for an occasional read, this may not be a first choice as there will be a few sections that do run long with not massive amounts of things in it.

Still, for the price, well worth it.

Excellent series and the one wrap up book running to three was fine with me, There were so many plot lines I thought one book would not do it justice. Brandon Saunderson is finishing off Robert Jordan's work and as Jordan knew he was dying he left lots of notes on what was meant to happen (and wrote the final scene himself before he passed).

The last book is due out early next year but read here to find out more http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/1058

Nooooo!

I've been holding off reading my ebook editions until I can get a guaranteed date of release so I can time the finishing of the penultimate book with the release on the last book.

Now I have to wait even longer before I can start.
