3M Cloud Library Goes Live at St Paul Public Library

The 3M Cloud Library is finally rolling out. Time will tell if it'll be successful.

Quote:
E-books have been available for virtual checkout at the St. Paul Public Library for quite a while. As of Wednesday, April 25, though, the supply of the digital volumes has mushroomed by roughly 50 percent.

The public library system, in a partnership with Maplewood-based 3M, is debuting an e-book service dubbed 3M Cloud Library for those who want to read on their computers, phones, tablets or e-book readers.

3M Cloud Library, which has been in development for more than a year, will complement a rival OverDrive e-book- lending service used by public library systems in Minnesota and around the country.

3M Cloud Library is bringing major changes to St. Paul Public Library branches. Touch-screen terminals have been installed at the Central, Arlington Hills and Sun Ray branches so patrons can peruse more than 3,100 digital volumes in the Cloud Library catalog and transfer titles to their Cloud Library accounts for reading on their computers or mobile devices.

Hmm, I wonder if we'll get it in Hennepin (who's invested in OverDrive to the tune of 31,000+ titles) anytime soon. Of course it looks like it only works on PC's, Android & iOS devices or an eReader you go to the library and borrow so I'm not sure how interesting it'll be.

I see I can bring my library card in and get a card for St. Paul libraries. Might have to do that just to give it a try the next time I'm on that side of town.

A couple more useful URL's...

Wow, you can check out 10 books at a time, and put another 10 on hold! Sounds good (if they have the right books )

The Kansas Digital Library Consortium ditched OverDrive on 05 Dec 2011 when its contract expired and has been beta testing the 3M Cloud Library for ebooks since 18 Jan 2012 and OneClickDigital for audiobooks since 21 Nov 2011. They had been battling OverDrive over a huge hike in fees for the new contract and also over ownership of the content they had purchased.

Here's a fascinating interview with Kansas State Librarian Joanne Budler, who led this fight with OverDrive.

Quote:
Ownership should be retained by the purchaser. Transfer from one shelf/platform to another should be based on DRM, i.e. as long as DRM is maintained, it should not matter which shelf/platform holds that content.

The 3M Library is also compatible with many ePub readers - Nook, Kobo, Sony.

If it's cloud-based, does that imply online reading, rather than downloads?

You can download to ereaders. I think cloud just refers to where the master files are stored.
