I can see the publishers selling DRM free at their own site and still with DRM at Amazon. I can also see them doing what S&S have done at their site which is to just sell ePub.

So this could be an issue for Amazon if they do these things.

Wouldn't work for me; I shop from a number of tiny publishers.

"All publishers" aren't going to be welcomed at any one store. How big does a company have to be before it's considered to be a publisher? Is Konrath's collection of a dozen of his own titles big enough to count? Is Closed Circle books--three authors sharing web-and-store space to sell ebooks of their backlist--a publisher? And would the store allow erotic and extreme content that the PBHs currently won't produce? Comic books? Gaming books?

There could be a "Big 6 store;" there won't be an "all publishers ebook store." Among the other problems, the big 6 would want preferential treatment that they're not getting from current "all publisher" ebook stores like Kobo and Diesel.

Harlequin isn't the cheapest place to get their titles, but they do discount some and the month early thing is a draw for some.

I do, too. But I was thinking of the one-stop shoppers.

I can imagine that there won't be any 1 store that will sell everything. But if Agnecy6 got together and created a site...it could do some brisk business.

If the Big 6 got together and sold books only at that site, or with far better prices at that site, they'd be facing a new antitrust problem.

I wouldn't think so. They aren't required to price according to competitors.

Direct selling by publishers is going to remain a niche market. People might go to Baen or Harl. or a handful of other sites. But they're not going to go to hundreds of sites to look for books. (And since we're talking about imprints, that's an actual number). People will just shop at Amazon.

And as for a one-stop shop to compete with Amazon...there is no way. The idea is ridiculous. Just because you can *think* of an idea doesn't mean you can carry it out...and doing something like this is *all about* execution.

Everything starts with thought.

I think it can work even if *you* don't.

It might be easier and cheaper to buy an existing ebook retailer.

No doubt their first order of business would be to open up Amazon brick and mortar locations and shutter the website. Today's publishing industry: The future is the past.

I think the BPHs would be more likely to buy B&N than Amazon.

David Pogue at the NY Times just included in his review of the new Nook the following very misleading paragraph:

"No, when you buy an e-reader, you’re committing to that one company’s catalog of books forever, because their book formats are mutually incompatible. You can’t read a Kindle book on a Nook, or a Nook book on a Sony Reader, or a Sony book on an iPad. Sure, you can read Nook and Kindle books on an iPad, but when you buy an actual Nook or Kindle, you’ve just married its company forever. If you ever want to change brands, you have to give up all the books you’ve ever bought."

And he calls himself a technology writer.
