Need help, can't get my Kobo to read any of my books

I'm at the point right now where I feel like taking my Kobo back :P my husband bought me a Kobo Wifi last night, and my parents who have one (well my father has one, and my mum has the Kobo touch) gave me there books and the Calibre program, and said all they have to do is right click it and send it over to the reader. Well when I open Calibre it doesn't find the reader at all, when I ran the debug it said there was no possible devices. So I started seaching and searched everywhere online last night and found a few people who had the same problem, and they found a work around by connecting the Kobo folder itself... so I tried that, I went to Connect/Share and connected the Folder Kobo, and it will now let me transfer the books over, but when you try to read them they all come out just a bunch of jumbled up letters, although you can read it on the computer fine, and works on my parents Kobo I think almost all of the books are .Mobi's so I'm not sure if maybe I need to convert them to something else to make them readable, but my parents who have Kobo's I don't think had to so I'm really lost as to why I can't read any of the books

Your version of calibre is *very* old, update.

Thanks for the help, so I updated the program, and it now can find my ereder, but all my books still come out as nothing other then jumbled up letters. I've tried a few books and there all the same. I have an .epub verision and a .mobi verision and both come out the same way.

Did those books view correctly on your PC in Calibre's Viewer? (I Suspect DRM'd books that view fine on a registered PC)

Another possibility is the book call for an unsupported (on you Kobo) codepage
