Sony put ADE on the old PRS-500. Given that the K1 has better specs then a 500, there is no reason Amazon could not support KF8 on all Kindles.

Since kf8 will be readable on all existing kindles and on the KFire, I don't see that anything is being splintered. Although of course the distinction between Amazon and Epub is being maintained.

I am very curious to see what the new format can do, though - and if anyone will take advantage of it.

For that matter, this is probably good news for Sony/Nook users, since it might encourage them to adopt epub 3, which afaik, no e-readers support yet.

The FAQ quoted earlier only mentions "latest generation" Kindle devices, and apps. Which is, by omission, essentially a statement that the K3 and prior won't support it.

I'm trying hard to care about any of this... I really am. I was almost there for a second, but then it went away. I think I'll just read a book.

I take it as the K3 and K4 will support KF8. But no idea if the DXG will or not.

So this would mean that the DX, K1 & K2 will be out and owners will have to upgrade or be SOL.

Something has been posted twice now in this thread that addresses (and refutes) your claim. Can you spot it?

That actually doesn't say what you think it says.

Q: What is Kindle Format 8?
A: Kindle Format 8 powers the book reader on Kindle Fire. KF8 replaces the Mobi format and adds over 150 new formatting capabilities including support for HTML5 and CSS3. In the coming months, we will roll out KF8 to our latest generation Kindle e-ink devices as well as our free Kindle reading apps.

Q: Will KF8 capabilities be available on all Kindle devices?
A: Kindle Fire is the first Kindle device to support KF8 - in the coming months we will roll out KF8 to our latest generation Kindle e-ink devices as well as our free Kindle reading apps.

Bold added by me. Amazon says clearly latest generation Kindles TWICE. They don't actually say that all Kindles will get KF8 support.

What Amazon says is...

Q: Will I have to provide two versions of my titles going forward?
A: No. The upcoming updates to our Kindle Publishing Tools will take care of this for you. KindleGen 2 will convert your content so that it works on all Kindle devices and apps. You will be able to preview how your title will look on the range of Kindle devices and apps using Kindle Previewer 2.

All that says is the new software will handle things. It doesn't say KF8 will be available to older Kindles.

All new books will be readable on old and new kindles. Presumably only the newer kindles will support all of the extra features k8 is bringing. Older Kindles will continue to be as functional as they are today.

So if you make your eBook look nice using the new features of KF8, then you'll have a suboptimal reading experience if you have an old Kindle. I don't think that will sit well with a lot of people.

It sounds to me like they will support ePub at some point. From their Kindle Format Overview web page:

Quote:
Upcoming enhancements to Kindle Publisher Tools will make it easier and faster for publishers to create high quality Kindle books. KindleGen 2 (available soon) creates Kindle content from a wide variety of sources including HTML, XHTML, and EPUB. Kindle Previewer 2 (available soon) provides an easy way for publishers to preview how titles will look on Kindle devices and apps so they can be confident that their Kindle books look great.

I am happy to sit and wait for "Alf plus in a can" for de-infestation purposes.

Indeed, that's actually an option now for the current Kindlegen - drag an epub to it and it converts to mobi.
