Help us choose the September 2011 selection to read for the MobileRead Literary Book Club! The poll will be open for three days.

We will start the discussion thread for the selected work on September 17th and a thread for October's nominations will be created five days later on September 22nd. I will start the threads, but the discussion thread may have a "discussion leader" if one volunteers. Everyone can post whatever thoughts they wish on the month's selection, but the discussion leader's goal will be to continue the dialogue in a thought-provoking direction with discussion questions and the like.

In the event of a tie, there will be a one-day run-off poll. In the event that the run-off poll also ends in a tie, the tie will be resolved in favour of the selection that received all five of its initial nominations first.

The People Of The Abyss by Jack London

An extremely moving, and hard-hitting account of the social conditions for thousands of people in 1902, as well as being an historical account, a social commentary, and a challenge - even to contemporary society.

This narrative takes place in England during the coronation of Edward VII. The British Empire is prosperous and strong, yet poverty is rampant in the nation's capital. Jack London lived in the worst sections of the city to explore this poverty, and then, using newspaper reports, police statistics, and his own experiences and observations shows us the condition of England's human cast-offs. London is not completely objective and his political views slip into his writing, but his effort to disguise himself as an out-of-work sailor and live in the East End give us a realistic view of this life.

Insurgent Mexico by John Reed

The material for this remarkable history came from journalist and poet John Reed's experience as a war correspondent during the Mexican Revolution. First published in 1914, the gripping Insurgent Mexico earned Reed everlasting fame as a top reporter of his time and left behind a vivid and unmatched portrait of a people, place, and time.

In 1910, Mexican peasant Pancho Villa led a rebellion against the wealthy landowners, and fought to redistribute land to the poor Mexicans who worked it for the absentee owners, in what has been called "the first socialist revolution". Originally published as a series of newspaper dispatches, Reed lived with the Mexican rebels, made friends with Pancho Villa, and was nearly killed in a battle with Mexican government forces.

Reed's reportage of his days with the Mexican guerillas captured the verve and spirit of the Mexican peon rising from ages of repression. His description of the desert marches, the battles and the exploits of the tropa is among the classics of its genre.

Christ Stopped At Eboli by Carlo Levi

Because of his uncompromising opposition to Fascism, Carlo Levi was banished at the start of the Abyssinian War (1935) to a small primitive village in Lucania, a remote province of southern Italy. In this region, which remains unknown not only to tourists but also to the vast majority of Italians, Carlo Levi, a painter, doctor, and writer, lived out a memorable time.

This is too weird! I had already downloaded three of the four nominations before the poll closed. I started Christ Stopped at Eboli last Thursday w/some feelings of guilt being so far behind in the discussions.

Also been trying to get ready for a trip, abandoning my flora, fauna and internet connections problems for some weeks. Sort of gotten into Anna Karenina and hope to catch up w/all reading related matters at hotels and airports.

Tough choice! I downloaded samples from Amazon to preview them, and I have made my decision. I am fine with any of these selections.

So this was a tough choice for me between The People Of The Abyss and Insurgent Mexico. In the end I went with Insurgent Mexico. I welcome the opportunity to learn more about Villa as for the most part all of the portrayals I have seen of him have been almost 'Frito Bandito' caricatures. That and he is tied up with an interesting time in history; the Mexican revolution, the Zimmermann Telegram, the US entry into WWI. This book would generate and interesting discussion I believe and I hope it wins. In any case it is a good selection of alternatives this month.

I admit to being disappointed. I'd have happily read any of the three losers and had a hard time deciding on my vote.

Don't know about Issybird, but in my case I fear it being on the "soppy" side and more focussed on the analysis of the guys' inner feelings and personal struggle rather than on the wider historical context. I might sit on the fence this time...

First I'll refer you to paola's excellent answer. I'll add that while I have no serious objection to Unbroken as a title for a general interest book club, I don't think it's a good choice for an explicitly literary book club. Admittedly without reading it, it seems to me as if it's feel good pap of the triumph of the human spirit type. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't get the sense that it sufficiently transcends its type in writing style or insight to qualify as literature.

I'm also going to pass. I hate to, since I have great expectations for this club, but my reading time is pretty squeezed at the moment.

It's definitely not soppy. While it does tell his story, it also tells about others around him. It's not sappy or one sided. You do get a real feel for how things were for him and others. Just ask others who have read it.

You do learn a lot of what happened to POWs of the Japanese. It's not at all like you think it is.

I am going to have to disagree with you. The writing is of high quality. It is literature. I did not nominate it to be silly or play games. I nominated it when the original nomination was pulled because it is worth reading. The way it's written tells the story in a way that makes you want to find out more. It's not feel good pap at all. What it is is a piece of history that is very well told.

I am going to pass on this one. I just finished reading the road, and I think i had my yearly dose of hope and despair. For heady stuff I will try to make some progress in the Art of Memory. For light stuff I am enjoying Gerald Durrell very much and somehow less but still cutely attractive Neil Gaiman's Fragile Things. For a novel, I can always pick up again Infinite Jest from where I left it.

I've read Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit and it was excellent. I gave it 4 or 5 stars on Goodreads, but it never would have occurred to me to nominate it as a literary book.
