Pérez Galdós, Benito: Torquemada en la hoguera (Spanish) v1 17 Jun 2011
Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) is considered one of the greatest Spanish novelists. He is best known for his novels depicting the Spanish society of his time, and for the series of historical novel on the Spanish 19th century, "Episodios Nacionales".
Francisco Torquemada is the name of a moneylender, a name probably chosen by the author for the connotation of cruelty attributed to the famous inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada. In a series of four novels with the former Torquemada as a protagonist, Galdós tells deals with the conflicts of conscience of the moneylender when his son falls severely ill, and then with his social rise, his resistance to behave as the society expects, and finally his own illness and death. The humorous and easy style of the author is evident throughout the four novels, which are:
Torquemada en la hoguera, 1889 (Torquemada at the Stake)
Torquemada en la cruz, 1893 (Torquemada on the Cross)
Torquemada en el Purgatorio, 1894 (Torquemada in Purgatory)
Torquemada y san Pedro, 1895 (Torquemada and Saint Peter)
Any kind of feedback is welcome.
