Highlighting causing crashes

I seem to find that my Kindle crashes regularly when I highlight. However, not in all conditions.

When I have a large number of books in my Kindle (eg. 150 or more) and I have highlighting already in a couple of books, I find that my Kindle starts crashing regularly when I highlight.

I got onto Amazon support and did the factory reset. Then I start uploading books from my backup a few at a time until eventually I got to a stage where I started crashing again. I found that if I removed highlighting from previous books, my highlighting in the current book didn't crash as much. However, there were still crashes.

When I keep a smaller number of books in the Kindle (eg. under 10), my highlighting is perfect and never causes me a problem.

Has anyone found this kind of behaviour? I don't really need my entire collection on Kindle, but that's the way I was planning to work.

Regards
Caleb

This is not normal behaviour at all. For some reason that Kindle is unstable; I would check if indexing is the problem (by random search), and reboot or restart, synchronize. If that doesn't help, call Amazon for advice.

Good advice from desertblues and also check if your kindle is on the latest firmware which could also make a difference:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=200529700

If you're using the amazon UNlighted leather cover, remove the Kindle from it to see if you still get the same problems occur - there have been issues with the over although normally it is related to freezing the Kindle

I use highlighting extensively to mark the errors in the books that I'm proof-reading. I've never had a crash. Not once.

I don't use covers.

As I mentioned in my first post, I've contacted Amazon already and we went through a factory reset.

I did have the latest patch at the time.

What I did after resetting everything was to copy books back onto the Kindle a few at a time and test the highlighting as I went.

Eventually I found a point at which crashes started creeping in again. It happened to be a time when I copied in books with previous highlighting, so I removed the highlighting from those books and then experienced less crashes for a bit, but the crashes started creeping in again.

I did ask Amazon support if this could have something to do with indexing but they didn't seem to want to comment one way or the other on that. My first suspicion was that there was somehow a link. How can I establish if indexing is ongoing for a particular book. A random search has been mentioned, but what specifically should I be looking for? I wouldn't mind establishing if there is a connection between indexing and these crashes.

While I have only a few books on the Kindle I can do as much highlighting as I want on multiple books. The problem only seems to occur when I have quite a large number of books on the device.

Did you check wether all your downloads from Amazon has been completed?Go to home......menu.... view downloading items. That last one should be greyed out;else redownload that book from ManageMyKindle on your Amazonpage.
If there's something wrong with downloading; the Kindle keeps working away and away;that takes a lot of energy as well, and your Kindle will be unstable.
I have 1200 books on my Kindle and my Kindle isn't slow or doesn't crash.
Try calling Amazon again, as the quality of their technical assistance differs; though they are always friendly.

Excellent - thanks for that. With this I'll be able to definitely see if there's indexing going on when I have my problems.

I'm not sure why this wasn't the first thing checked by Amazon support. Grrr.

Hi - more often than not, my books are sideloaded. In fact it's pretty rare that I bother turning on the WiFi to download books directly from Amazon.

Just try doing a search within the book. If it hasn't yet been indexed it'll tell you so.
