Android Tablets capture 22% of the tablet market nocking iPad down to 75% in just 3mo

That is some growth, and the tablets that exist on the market are horrible compared to what is slated this summer.

Quote:
Google Inc.’s Android software boosted its share of tablet computers almost 10-fold in the fourth quarter, narrowing the lead of Apple Inc.’s iPad, market researcher Strategy Analytics said.

Android devices captured 22 percent of global tablet shipments in the three months to Dec. 31, up from 2.3 percent in the preceding quarter, the Boston-based researcher said in a statement today. The iPad accounted for 75 percent of shipments in the period, down from about 95 percent, it said.

Competition is great. Shipments aren't the same as sales, though, as highlighted with the Samsung Galaxy Tab:

this is what happens when you misspell in a forum full of avid readers, lol.

it seems with the selection android tablets offer - from cheapo $100 crap to wallet breaking $800 units it would be easy to grab share from groups who either want to get away from apple or don't feel like paying much for a tablet.

i've played with honeycomb on my nook color and this bring the ui to modern times. if android can get the quality of apps that apple has and have some way of moderating apps on it's store it'll be the greatest (how does a wall paper app full of half naked asian women get accepted into the finance section? or how is there always warez available on the market - look up nearly any top seller and you'll see bunches of copyrighted material.)

Now that Apple has shown the manufacturers how to build a good tablet, we'll see the same thing thats happened in other markets: Apple and its shareholders will hoard the major part of the profits -- while Android (and Rim) will hoard the major part of the marketshare and the...oh, thats it. The marketshare.

Snagged a Pandigital 7" for $60 last month.

The latest firmware turned it into an excellent reader/tabklet.

Funny how short sited this comment is. Back in the MS' hay day the ONLY worried about market share. Profits was something they never looked at, and when they dominated the market share they controlled the market which leads to long lasting revenue.

Yes pretty much, the statistics mention the growth grew 22% in 3mo so that gives us Oct,Nov, and Dec.

Growth of sales is not the same as the growth of shipments. You actually have to sell the device, not just ship it to stores, to gain market share.

I'm waiting for an iPad replacement, but have yet to see an Android device that I want. I'm looking forward to seeing what emerges in the next six months or so.

Hmmm,

Nothing against Apple, but ....

I though that's exactly how capitalism and computer companies work, isn't ? I mean, you came with a good or nice idea, but nothing warranty you that others can't improve it. Actually, I never though Apple tablets were so good; with no USB port and no Flash support, it was a "no no" to me since the very beginning. There are tons of people who like them but they are just not for me. Now with Android, I can finally enjoy a tablet which has ports and let me use Flash; the name? Galaxy Tab. And sure more Android based tablets are coming and probably better and faster.

Yes, me too. And to rebuild my exchequer after having to spend my “shiny new toy” disposable money on a new laptop for my son.

Although a Samsung Galaxy Tab comes close.

That's because they had a de facto standard (also a monopoly) for developers to write to (Windows) without a strong competitor in the second spot.

Apple has never been number one in hardware sales, but it made sure that app development for its platform outgrew what its hardware sales say it should have been.

Even when Android takes number one in hardware sales, there is no way that Google is going to convince developers to stop developing for the iPlatform. It's simply proven to be too rich a market. Apple will continue to be a growing and profitable number 2, 3, 4, or 5. Android just can't have a typical kill-our-competitors-at-will monopoly like MS did. No way, no how.

Thats why I said Jobs is not just a technical visionary, he's a really good businessman too.

Welcome to yesterdays technology.

You know that these are just points that vendors are using to sell their device to you, right? Ask yourself -- what am I trying to accomplish?

I guarantee that you can do it 98% of the time without Flash or a USB port. Use some critical thinking and forward vision and stop letting vendors do it for you. Apple is really good at building hardware...if something is really needed, they'll bake it in. If they leave it out, it's because usually, there is a better way.

Flash isn't that big a deal to iPad owners because they can accomplish the same things, but a different way.

And by the way, flash doesn't run on my Pandigital Novel nor on the Android phone that I'm buying. I'll do things another way. >shrug< And most of those companies that want my business have already made it easy for me.
