changing margins of pdf
I just got a library ebook and would like to zoom to 125% in order for the text to be large enough to comfortably read but the text runs off the screen to the right. I have the pdftoepub converter but it doesn't seem to work on material that has been purchased through borders or loaned from the library. |

You can only fiddle with it if you strip the DRM protection off of it.

Of course, by "removing" DRM, you'd be committing an illegal act and exposing yourself to legal action from Big Content.
If you were smart enough to avoid the whole DRM dance entirely and are looking for a solution to this problem, you may want to check out a free software utility called Briss. I've experienced mixed results personally so I can't say for sure if it would offer a true solution for you. The utility can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/briss/ |

That said Omaha, you'll have to strip the DRM, but if you do, Briss, which crops the margins of a PDF, has worked well for the few times I've used it.

If you need to go down the path of removing DRM on a PDF, then why not use Calibre to convert the book to a more ereader friendly format?
PDF can be a really difficult document format to display well on small 5-6" ereaders. |

Demand more PDF handling features from Kobo!
Access the PDF on a computer with a screen over 6 inches and with infinitely more features. Not much you can do on the Kobo at this point if the margins are ruining your ability to see the text. I get this problem as well on PDFs. The zoom feature doesn't shoot in towards the center but shoots in at the left margin which alienates the right margin and renders scooting around on the pdf fairly pointless. You'll just get lot's of margins and some text rather than text and little margin. |

The Kobo handles ePUB extremely well. Convert the PDF with Calibre. |

Therein lies the rub. If a PDF has DRM infesting it then you cannot reformat it in any way, including adjusting margins.
PDF's are documents not ebooks. Publishers do not create a PDF document with an ebook reader in mind and ebook manufacturers such as Kobo would not consider a PDF to be as important as say an ePUB to display. The only option you have, apart from seeking an ePUB version, is to remove the DRM. |

PDF is a last resort for most. Thankfully, there is ample (buoyant!) room for the improvement of PDF handling on "Oh! So many!" eBook reading devices that it can't help but get better with time, even as a back burner project. A silver lining in our dingy Microfiber eJackets.
