Google Shows Off Sweet Tablet Prototype

Google Shows Off Sweet Tablet Prototype

When asked about pricing, Google engineer Andy Rubin quipped that the actual cost of the Motorola prototype tablet he demoed at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference was around $10,000. Consumers will probably get it for considerably less when it hits store shelves, but with the new Android Honeycomb operating system under its hood, it will likely compete with high-end tablets like the iPad and Galaxy.

In a figurative googolplex of names and programs, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT) unveiled a tablet computer Monday night at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference that runs on Google's Android 3.0 operating system, aka "Honeycomb." Only the tablet remains without a name.

Pretty impressive, but I don't think I'd pay $10K for it.

Hopefully more reasonable by the time it gets to market.

The most I'd pay for any tablet is $350; otherwise, I'm quite happy with my $250 Nook Color.

I can't even see paying $350 for a tablet....Nook Color is the best I'd go.

Ah but can you do your taxes on it?

I've got plenty of ebook readers.

$350 for a dual-core processor, 10" tablet running Honeycomb? Yeah, I'd grab that in a heartbeat.

You will be waiting for at least 6 more months for that, and then it will more likely be in the 5-600 USD range for anything of acceptable build quality. I personally would prefer something with a full fledged OS that could replace my laptop but is no heavier than the iBad. Light, speedy, and with a long lasting battery. We can always dream.

Why are tablets so expensive?

By contrast, netbooks (with better specs and functionality) are much cheaper.

Mostly cause the design/manufacturing process has been in place and optimized for laptops for a decade or so now...all the tablet stuff is relatively new -- closest thing being cell phones and they too are pretty new when it comes to touch input etc...

And if you compare the prices with high end cell phones w/o contract (carrier subsidies), you'll find those in the same range as the better tablets.

Which means they're just as overpriced as the tablets are.
