Nook Color is official. LCD screen. How is this going to be distinctive in an increasingly saturated tablet market?
The nookcolor.com URL is working and takes you to the page on the B&N site.

The distinction is that it's a $250 iPad; if it has a full web browser.

Presumably it'll be some kind of rebadged Android tablet?

Time for the specs. The screen, "Vivid View" from LG. 16 million colors. "We invested in a full lamination screen film technology." Maximizes readability of backlit LCD while minimizing glare.
How they minimized glare?

It's an IPS display @ 1024 x 600 and 169 PPI.

As a medium sized fish, instead of competing with the big fish in Amazon, they choose to swim with the sharks. Good luck B&N.
They might sell a bunch as one of the first Android tablets. But after waves of Android tablets arrive within a year, then what's the strategy? |

It's inevitably going to get compared to the iPad.

From the blog link:
4:48PM "Will it access the Google Store? Does it support Flash? Will it support sideloading apps?" No (we want a "curated experience" and will add to its own store), no (but you can access the web), and yes (really?). |

From a technical perspective, I agree with you; that's what it should be compared to, but Android tablets haven't really entered the public perception as the iPad has. When most people see a tablet they think "iPad".

Not only will it be compared to iPad and Galaxy tablets, there are competitors out there with a lower price point with similar technology. Well, at least one, the Cruz line. Their reader tablet is similar specs, maybe not quite as nice, but at $199.99 it may prove stiff competition. They also have a more robust model for $299.99 aimed at being a tablet rather than a reader.

As long as they think that way, I'm not interested. I'll get a Nook Color before I ever consider paying those outrageous prices. |
