Vélez de Guevara, Luis: El diablo cojuelo (Spanish, annotated), v. 1.1, 2 Nov 2010
Luis Vélez de Guevara (1579-1674) was a Spanish playwright who contributed to the "Golden Age" of Spanish literature, and particularly drama, together with others like Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca. He wrote more than four hundred pieces, of which around one hundred are conserved today.
"El diablo cojuelo" (The Lame Devil, The Crippled Devil) is a humorous novel, where a student finds an imprisioned devil in an alchemist's laboratory, frees it, and then this devil shows the student the living, miseries, tricks and mischiefs of the people at the time. The devil of the title is a popular character of Spanish folklore, more mischievous than evil.
This edition is fully annotated by Francisco Rodríguez Marín, and the notes are welcome, because there are many words and expresions that are too involved to be easily understood today. The text comes from Project Gutenberg, but many corrections have been applied.
All feedback is welcome
EDIT (v. 1.1): Fixed minor problem with quotes.
