Anderson, Sherwood: Winesburg, Ohio. 17 Aug 07
Written in 1919, Winesburg, Ohio is the most famous book by Anderson. Known best for his short stories, it is really a collection of short stories bound around a common theme and set in the same town. One of the first modern writers in the US, he was a frequent contributor to The Dial magazine in New York City and part of the new modern post war era.
One of the reasons I got a job back in high school was to buy books that the local libraries did not stock, The Portable Sherwood Anderson was one of those.

This book was also the inspiration for Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles." He wanted to write a book like "Winesburg Ohio" and he had that thought in the back of his mind when he wrote the stories though he wasn't consciously aware of it til after he'd written MC.
