Big Brother Revisited
A couple of things I've noticed:
1) Amazon pushes updates that you might not notice, because they don't change the software version number. The one I just noticed is called Update_PRL_50428.bin, and updates the cellular “preferred roaming list” on the K2US—harmless enough, but it shows that they can do more behind your back. 2) More importantly, anyone remember those magic “atv:kin:1” headers in downloaded files? We still don't know the format, but one thing is clear: these are harvested by the indexer and periodically (by request) uploaded to Amazon. This isn't just a theoretical ability; I actually caught it happening. So Amazon may know if you move files between devices. What they actually do with this information is unclear. |

One thing about #2:
AFAICT, this information is completely removed if you delete the file. So just deleting any “sketchy” files and letting the indexer update *before* enabling wireless should be sufficient to prevent leaving bread crumbs. But of course they could change this at any time. |

Does anyone know offhand what address(es) the Kindle connects to for these Big Brother features? With the wifi-only version at least, it would be trivial to deny access on your router.

1984 today
I told you.... just do some research about this suspect..
1984 is allmost real in 2010.. maybe in 2016 it will be like the author wrote about it. Thats one reason why amazon removed the book earlier .. You read with their device, but they read you! |

The reasons for Amazon removing and refunding that particular book are well known and have nothing at all to do with the content of the book or the fact that somebody is reading it. It is pointless trying to come up with extra paranoid theories. Discussion of known facts like the upload of logs to Amazon is fine but you're just making stuff up now. Put your tinfoil hat back on and stop spreading FUD.
