i'm looking for ebooks...
in detective/mystery, fantasy or urban fantasy but with the following in common:
No focus on romance (a little is okay if it fits in naturally) No cutesy stuff (a little humor is fine, but no cupcake makers, bed and breakfasts, heavy focus on pets, small children being extra cute or unrealistically precocious Well-fleshed out characters who feel like real people No unrelenting misery Little or no goofy humor No focus on how gorgeous the main characters are. i started a book the other day that started wutg 5 good sized paragraphs describing just how very gorgeous some woman was, complete with detailed - VERY detailed description. she may or may not have been the main character, but I moved on. yeesh! Nice and long ebooks or series preferred If fantasy or magical, I prefer the magic to be a counterpoint against a realistic world or to be realistically woven in so it feels genuine. fairly contemporary language. peter wimsey is fine. Any ideas? Last edited by basschick; 07-02-2011 at 11:36 PM. |

If you just want plain drtective stories, there's lots to choose from. Try, for example, Peter Robinson's series. Very well written, and good characters. And all available as ebooks.

For Urban Fantasy, you might try the Dean Koontz Odd Thomas series

I have to confess that I've never been entirely sure what "Urban Fantasy" actually is.

The Dresden Files series fits all your criteria. I just started re-reading them again. Love Jim Butcher!

Basschick ... check out Louise Penny and her series of Chief Inspector Armand Gamache who investigates murders mainly in the small Quebec town of Three Pines. These are somewhat like updated Agatha Christie: strong characters, intriguing puzzles, sly humour, a murder or two but little gore. The series of six novels are all available as ebooks. Ms Penny recently won her fourth Agatha Award for best novel ... I believe the first time any author has done so.
Depending on your location, some or all should be available at Amazon, Kobo, B&N and Sony. The first title is Still Life. I've been posting short reviews of (mainly detective) stories in this thread; you'll find lots of recommendations there as well. And check out Langtail Press for some classic tales at reasonable prices. There's a thread about that here too. |

Are there any "urban fantasy" series that don't turn into unrelenting misery?! It's one of the problems I have with them...they just seem to get progressively darker (including those Dresden File books).

I'm a firm believer that everyone should read what they want to read with no interference. But I have to say, that I find myself constantly surprised by the strict, unique, and mostly exclusionary requirements that many seem to assign to their TBR list. Everything that I can think of falls short of at least one or two of your prerequisites.

Indeed. While no doubt delicious, living on chocolate alone is not healthy.

For detectives/mysteries, what about Anne Perry's William Monk and Thomas Pitt series?

Give the Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles series by Tess Gerritsen a go. Very good. Not at all like the TV series.
Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books are very good. |
