PW Gen 1 updates?
The last software update for the first gen Paperwhite seems to be 5.4.4.2 while the second gen is up over 5.6. Does anybody happen to know if we'll get any more updates for the first gen, or have they pretty much dropped us? Just wondering, as folks here seem to know a lot! I guess it's not possible to put the second gen updates onto a first gen PW?

Unlikely there'll be more updates for the PW1. Amazon do, however, sometimes surprise us!
No, you can't run PW2 firmware on a PW1. |

I would hope that Amazon would bring out the new typesetting features for currently selling Kindles and include the PW1.

PW2, Voyage and Basic Kindle yes, definitely. PW1, very unlikely.

(Voyage and PW3 owners can no longer install jailbreaks without hardware modifications.) The "new typsetting features" wouldn't make much of a difference, since the new Bookerly font actually looks worse on the PW2/PW1 than the default Caecilia font. |

There was one K3 update to resolve serious security issues, IIRC -- fw3.4.1 -- and absolutely no new features or standard bugfixes were included. The K3 will NOT receive updates as a matter of course, nor will any other no-longer-selling device. (Amazon typically seems to provide at most one last update to their no-longer-sold models before dropping them for good.)
Obviously Amazon ensures those devices still work with the bookstore. |

No longer sold -- maybe not the best way of putting it. Occasionally Amazon has a sale of old stock, e.g. the reappearing DX.
I meant to distinguish abandoned models like the PW1 and earlier from the PW2 which is still a "current device" despite being succeeded (kind-of-but-not-really) by the Voyage. Anyway, as I said, the K3 update involved very minimal changes. I am not aware of any changes to the text rendering, although I suppose there could've been coincidental interactions with the intended changes. |

The text on the K3 did improve. I remember connecting to wifi sometime around November 2013 after having been off the grid for three months or so, and the default caecilia font had changed to a slightly narrower and weightier version.

the DX they are selling are USED! Don't come with any warranties ...which is why I gave up on them.

They were selling old DXs that were were most likely held back for use in fulfilling warranties...

We will see how good (or bad) it is 10 days or so later. I, for one, am very excited to see the design choices Dalton Maag made between the formats. |

They have done it before and it might theoretically show up again. But whatever.
