Vista Compatibility Information
One somewhat surprising good source of information turns out to be the Direct2Dell blog by Dell. You'll find information about the Microsoft Program Compatibility Wizard, reasons for incompatibility, troubleshooting tips and even information about using VirtualPC for overcoming compatibility issues. |

Thanks for the pointer, Bob. Just... how does Windows Vista qualify as a topic under "Mobile Devices"? I mean no disrespect, of course, but I think it would fit much better into the "Lounge" zone, and perhaps not on the frontpage... (just my personal opinion).

Traditionally, we have posted items on the front page that are considered of high interest to those with mobile devices and/or related to e-reading. Certainly, the choice of what goes on the front page won't satisy everyone, so I hope that readers will be understanding, and simply pick and choose what is interesting to them.
Just to give you an idea of what I was thinking in this case, it seems likely to be of interest not only to tablet PC and UMPC users and prospective buyers, but it also seems an appropriate topic due to the close ties with both mobile computing and e-books. There is, of course, a significant impact to anyone using format conversion programs or desktop software used for support of mobile computing, as has already been brought up a number of times in the forums. Having said that, we certainly are sensitive to the fact that we have people visiting with all kinds of interests. We do our best to shape the selection and presentation of news items to be those that are meaningful to a large number of people, as well as staying focused on things that continue to excite us as editors. Hopefully, MobileRead will always remain a site that has personality as well as relevant news. |

Supposedly, the Librie software isn't Vista compatible. And the Connect software from Sony is not compatible with 64-bit Windows as the device driver is only 32-bits.

Anybody used the compatibility wizard in Vista yet? It never worked for me in previous OS releases. Incompatible programs stayed incompatible.

I didn't really have much of a choice because my notebook came preinstalled with Vista. I told myself that if I didn't stop hating Vista within five days, I'd wipe it off the harddisk and install Ubuntu instead. Fortunately, Vista proved to be pretty usable because my notebook came with all the necessary drivers and all 3rd party apps I use have released Vista upgrades by now.

I'm going to stick with Vista 64, it's been pretty ok. Only run into 2 apps that don't like it so far, the Sony software being one of them. I just got a XP dual-boot set up now, so I'll just have to switch over to it for the times I need to load more books onto the reader.

It fits because new computers that come with Windows come with Vista. Most mobile devices have some sort of Windows software so the device can talk to the computer. Now if you buy some mobile device and it has a program for Windows, you'll want to install it. But if it's not Vista compatible, you won't be able to. The Sony Librie software doesn't seem to work with Vista for example.
