Amazon has the possible introduction of the Kindle however they seem to want to work with outside suppliers. This means that if they introduce their own unique reader it will be manufactured by someone else under contract to them. That part is easy. The iRex has the most advanced hardware and e-ink screen currently in production. This serves as a benchmark. We still don't know who will make the actual unit.

In sales the worst thing is a boomerang. That is a good that is sold and comes back. At Amazon's reported profit margin (from 10k reports) they do not have the margin to survive in that market with the failure rate of the iRex.

Sure they want to sell the unit and then sell the books to go on it. The ultimate goal most likely is for either the device directly communicating with Amazon or through a USB connection to a computer and then to Amazon where you can browse Amazon just as you do today and buy the book, have it downloaded to the reader, and never have to do anything other than pay for it.

Manufacturing is cheaper elsewhere in the world. It is a fact that is now a 'oneway street'. Anyone trying to reverse it will hit a wall, a BIG wall. Even intellectual, creative work such as software development will be better catered from elsewhere.
What's left? Creating markets... managing old money... and pushing purposeless litigations. Let the world do the rest!

Don't want to be antagonistic but music is England's 'forte',

India's Bollywood has more movie productions and sales and good scifi is made in Eastern Europe, Britain and Canada where it's cheaper to produce (with US money and stars of course)

And as Robert points out, Israel has a lot to do in code and I'd add India.

That brings us back to my previous post where I enumerate the REAL powers behind music, movies and code. The American genius at creating markets, the old money that starts them and the litigation that keeps them trucking.

As for Pizza... the tower is still leaning.

True for music, not for movies (asian movies are way better), true for microcode (although indian and asian ppl help a lot), and true for pizza delivery.

Oh and Snow Crash is a fantastic book !
