I think this is a valid point, but it should be addressable in software, especially with the high-density e-ink screens, by using thumbnail images of the pages. When we flip through pages rapidly, it's as much the general shape of the page that we recognize as anything, I think. For example, we recognize chapter beginnings and ends, pages with lots of dialog and line breaks, illustrations, etc. Those would all be visible in a thumbnail view. I'd
