Android File Transfer works fine on the Mac. It isn't as elegant as native mass storage support, but it works just fine. It just requires manually sideloading the files.

And it might be possible to conjure up a little utility to dummy up a disk interface to AFT... ie. a little wedge driver that fools Calibre (or any other app for that matter) into thinking that AFT is a disk.

All in all, upgrading is worth the added inconvenience, IMO.
