Using p.hd or just .hd is just a matter of personal coding style. Some may want to have a single style for every class="hd" element, some may want to specify different styles for <p class="hd"> or <span class="hd"> or <img class="hd"> (even if only one of them is used at first).
I prefer to include the element name in the stylesheet, that way I know exactly what the class was originally intended for.
