Anything that is not open source is considered "non free" by Ubuntu, even if it is "free of charge". Anyway, nothing prevents you from using "non free" drivers, it's just that they like to keep them in a separate category.
You could use an Ubuntu generic driver, but some features of your hardware may not be available.
