Using the same method to put the older files back doesn't make a difference, so I'm curious what I did wrong.
Latest update: some package info/manager thing allowed me to de-install CoolReader, in whatever state it was, which seemed to remove the files. Then re-installing the cr3*.apk file worked. Phew.
