I didn't get an email response after 24 hours so I requested a call from Kobo.
They really did call within five minutes.
Customer Care was well aware of the firmware upgrade issue.
They requested photos of the front and back of the reader.
I sent those along with an image of my receipt.
Then they replied with a brief questionnaire about my Kobo Wifi.
I got a reply back saying they would send a replacement, a Kobo Touch,
and I would have to mail them my bricked reader with a prepaid envelope.

I also tried the flashing the .img file onto the reader.
It seemed to do the trick, I could connect to the reader,
and contents in the internal SD card were listed in Calibre.
However, now, the screen is no longer functioning.
So that is really that for this piece of hardware.

Hope this info helps if anyone else is having the same issue.

Thanks again to everyone who shared info and their experience
with this issue.
Just so you know, they will not ship out a charging micro USB cable with the refurb unit. The cable the wifi one uses is a different one than the Touch uses, so hopefully you have an extra sitting around.

Glad they are owning up and shipping you out a replacement...
