Thanks for the response.

I just tried emailing to the Kindle Paperwhite, and still no luck. The "Sync to Furthest Page Read" option is still grayed out. Any further ideas?

Also, as for the Nexus 4, I'm not sure what the issue would be. This is on Windows, and the Nexus 10 shows up fine. MTP seems to function fine for both devices in Windows.

*UPDATE*

Got this to work by turning on automatic sync. For some reason wouldn't work without that. The way that worked was to email to my Paperwhite, then use the website to send the same document to the N4. (Still no luck with N4 and Calibre, though)
