The only book on a similar subject I am aware of is
Kindle Formatting: The Complete Guide. This is probably worth buying for anyone intending to format multiple ebooks. I don't remember if it discusses starting with PDFs though. Since this is somewhat Kindle-specific, there probably is room for a similar "ePub Formatting" book.
