A few books come to mind.
Agent of Change by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.
Dinosaur Beach by Keith Laumer.
Anathem by Neal Stephenson - I wouldn't say it "grabs you emotionally", but it does grab you pretty good IMO (it's got a bit of a slow start though).
