The reason I ask is that if CC can open the kindle app for mobi, it should be able to do exactly the same thing for .azw3 as long as they are stored in the "kindle" folder with no subfolders.

Yes, they are both assigned to the kindle folder and there are no folders. I have 3.1.0 version of CC.
