Nook crashes with epub from html with arrows.

I have installed some epubs that I converted from html with Calibre to epub.

The HTML version has a TOC page with chapter links and arrows at the beginning of each chapter to take you to the TOC or back and forth between chapters.

If I load the book as-is onto my new Nook it can't open the file and fails back to the menu.

If I remove all the navigation links from the epub then the nook takes it just fine.

This tag apparently crashes the Nook.
<div class="right"> <A HREF="#contents" class="nava">&#94</A> <A HREF="#chapter_2" class="nava">&raquo;</A></div><div>

This tag from a different book apparently does NOT crash the Nook.
<p class="sgc-5"><a href="#contents"><img alt="Top" border="0" src="../Images/Top.gif" title="Top" /></a> <a href="#chapter_2"><img alt="Next" border="0" src="../Images/Next.gif" title="Next" /></a></p>

Thanks for your input
