We should have screens with a plastic, rather than glass, substrate by the end of this year or early next year.
I must respectfully differ with your assertion that they are "very delicate". They are pretty immune to straightforward impact - what generally breaks the screen are bending or twisting forces. Avoid those, and you should be just fine.
