Well now I'm not so sure. I just received a follow-up email from Kobo, after I indicated that I believe the issue to be a firmware one:

"I am truly sorry you have been experiencing these issues since you bough the product. Before we proceed with anything else I want to kindly ask you to reset the device once more then set it up normally, but this time do not add anything through Calibre. Add some free books from www.kobobooks.com, load them through the Kobo desktop and let us know How it goes from there."

I responded that as indicated in the event log I sent them, I already did that, and there appears to be no issue with content from Kobo. We'll see what transpires.
