I think what it really took was a touch friendly OS and accompanying applications; whether that be iOS, or Android or something else.

Gates tried making XP and Win7 touch friendly with more or less success, but the applications remain somewhat less than friendly. The phone apps are built from the ground up with large menus and buttons just for use with fingers.
