I'm having exactly the same problem, and oddly, mine started in the middle of a session. Everything was fine, then suddenly not. I've tried upgrading Calibre, moving from the portable to the desktop versions, flushing dns then rebooting and running it with firewall and antivirus disabled. I've even disabled all metadata sources then tested them one at a time. Nada. The error for all sources is:

Request extra headers: [('User-agent', 'Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.2; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1')]
Found 0 results
Downloading from Google took 1.79699993134
Failed to make identify query: u'http://books.google.com/books/feeds/volumes?q=isbn%3A9780440209805&max-results=20&min-viewability=none&start-index=1'

URLError: <urlopen error [Errno 10061] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it>

Help?
