MobiPocket's ePub strategy seems to be off-line (or Desktop) conversion to MOBI format, and Amazon could offer ePub to Kindle conversion service today if they wanted to using mobigen. They might argue, though, that the conversion isn't quite good enough yet (e.g. no SVG to image capability).
This might be a business opportunity for someone, since the Linux version of mobigen makes it almost trivial to setup an ePub to MOBI conversion website.
